I went through all these emotions in the grieving process now on it's third month, and when I watched the movie it was still early on in the process after death, and now by the third month I'm understanding how one comes to accept what a father was and what to move on with. But when faced with the imminent mortality of his old man, he starts to reflect on the times when he really knew his father rather than the recent past of well-intentioned but infrequent fleeting visits. It tells the tale of a difficult father son relationship, much of in retrospect as the son, the adult Blake Morrison (played by Colin Firth), struggles to come to terms with his father's terminal illness and impeding death and remembers events involving his father from his childhood and youth. Like my dad, this dad had some skeletons in the closet and wasn't the most adept father, but he still loved his son in the way he knew how to love.
Tim Burton took a fanciful approach to the same subject in Big Fish (2004), but director Anand Tucker has no need of bells and whistles, instead letting Colin Firth, and especially Jim Broadbent, enthral us with wonderfully vivid performances. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. Colin Firth continues to impress me with his talent! How many unanswered questions are we all left with? Serious actors, lush Yorkshire countryside, musings on mortality and morality… this is undeniably a quality drama. Father constantly wishes out loud son were more like himself.

My Dad would never have spent time with a woman alone away from my mother so I couldn't relate entirely, but I it is a touching movie I've learned to watch with a couple tissues at hand. Anyone who has had a less than perfect relationship with their dad should be able to relate. I love that this was a true story based on someone's life experience, The actors each played a vital role in my enjoyment of this real life drama that captured my heart and emotions.
