Reliability is our number one priority for the wheels on bikes at this price, weight being the sacrifice. I’ve always been a fan of the GT Grade, the original launched back in 2014 (as a 2015 model year bike) and was a groundbreaking machine, we even awarded it best debut in our 2015 Bike of the Year awards. These are the best part of £50, though, so a bit of Google searching later I found an alternative on eBay for £14.99 – complete with all the fittings for both a Garmin and a light (using a Go-Pro mount) – which keeps it out front and in-line with the stem, a really neat solution.

Nove says that the Race is its lightweight endurance machine. On building it up and running through the options list, a few choices needed to be made. The wheels are deep enough to look the part, are fashionably wide and are tubeless ready although they come with standard rim tape, so you’d need to buy tubeless tape and valves separately. GRX has proven itself totally reliable, and I’m suitably impressed, but the best part by far is the GRX 810 STI lever, which is a marvel. The tyres were great in Montana’s dry, dusty conditions, but back in the UK on some damp rides they have all the grip of Bambi on ice, so I’ll be switching those for the winter. We’ve tested the Nove wheels built on the optional DT Swiss hubs.

It’s a technique that frame designers use to create tubes that are oversized and stiff at one end – for instance, at the load-bearing junction with the bottom bracket – but retain a level of compliance elsewhere to boost rider comfort. With disc brakes, that’s a very creditable figure that matches or betters many other brands’ machines at this price point or above. Like the Nove Race’s gearing (and its name), its geometry too sends out rather mixed messages. It’s unobtrusive, out of the wind and gives an effective hold to the seatpost. Size range: XS – XL Size tested: M When we first hopped on the GTS Sport, it felt exactly the same as the best £1k to £3k bikes – the position of the saddle, handlebars and pedals was just how we liked it. The Grade is such a sorted chassis, it superbly combines really agile handling traits with a very compliant frame and it all comes in a package that’s impressively light – the Grade frame is just 980g, impressive stuff for a gravel bike. There are four outlets shown in the UK: one in London, a couple in the Midlands and one in Scotland. The wheels are also from Shimano – 650b GRX alloy units. Nove lets you choose from an extensive range of wheels. We’ve got Ultegra with hydraulic disc brakes, a 53/39 chainset (an option that I’ve not had on a test bike in ages) and an 11-28 cassette. In short, the GTS Sport performs exactly as we’d hoped. The down tube is wide and flat bottomed, so it’s unlikely to give you any aero benefits, but the seat tube has a curved leading edge and a flat rear, so it should help the bike cut through the air better than a round profile. Having said that, the test Nove Race has come in a run-of-the-mill gloss black. Considering the amount of additional equipment I have on this bike (dropper post, extra brake levers, remote shifters, XTR pedals and two bottle cages), the 9.5kg all-up weight is pretty decent. The configurator shows a range of Pro saddle options, but the test bike comes with a Fabric Scoop. I was always going to go GRX on the Grade because the bike has already been built up by Shimano as part of its GRX launch, which I attended. Long term I may look to upgrade the wheels to something a little lighter and also add a set of 700c wheels into the mix. So you can have different colours, for example, for the inside and the outside of the fork legs and the stays, or make the seat tube a different colour from the rest of the frame. That starts with the frame colour: you can select from 54 different colours for the frame and apply different ones to different parts. Depending on how strong you are and where you ride, the Nove Race’s ratios may or may not work for you.

You can select your preferred bar width, stem length, crank length and saddle width. The ride position is stretched compared to most endurance bikes.

On road climbs the high weight does make itself known, but the compact chainset and 11-28t cassette do give you a fighting chance. Weight: 7.49kg/16.5lb But there are some important elements like tyre choice that are not alterable, there’s limited tyre clearance and the Nove Race’s price tag looks high.

Go for the most basic Shimano 105 spec and Shimano alloy wheels and the Nove Race will set you back £2,872, if you’re prepared to build it yourself. Already have an account with us? The bike is designed for adventure and to be raced at a gran fondo, but its large volume tyres and disc brakes mean it can still get off the beaten track to ride dirt roads and gravel. These are up to Shimano’s usual quality and are shod with Vittoria Terrano Dry 47c tyres. The GTS Sport will do you proud.
