She stated, George, I want you to save my house, and agreed to sell the house for a feasible sum in exchange for his promise to restore it. I moved in the house, and I would come in the house, and right in the front hallway, you could always smell lilacs. And I gave that, I thinkI dont know if I gave it to Bess. The stables were here for years. Burke kept records of the work, most of which he completed himself and financed the through the sale of his business, the Tidewater Inn. Burke: Mario Buatta and a couple of people of his friends that were just as big. So my sister Bess said, Well, come on, lets go to Florida. He upholstered that chair with the things in the back. And all these houses would never here! Oh, God. It was unbelievably gorgeous. And with that money, I restored most of the house. And that guy, look at the size of that house he just built. And on top of that, I still worked for Sherwin Williams. But they did a lot for me. And I had the two apartments! But it doesnt work that way. Daller: Oh, I dont know. Daller: Well, he hopes that Historic House Trust and the Parks Department work hand in hand and maintaining itthat theyll maintain it as a museum. And we cant come over here because both of them lived way out in New Jersey, and theyd come every day. And the kitchen was outside. Yes, the dining room and the kitchen was on the other two, side. I collected all my antiques and all my stuff when I was traveling. He used to stay out here. I mean, I couldnt do stuff like that all the other stuff I could do. And thats what where all the water, for all the laundry, and all that kind of stuffnot the drinking water, the working waterwould come out of that big cistern, and would go intoand the pump and everything, its still down there, connected to that thing out there. Q: Was it a similar style? Burke: Yes, I had to go down in the basement, and put a post, and then I had to jack up the stairs. And there was a whole other floor, another story, and its built with the French style, in the French mansard. Burke: Oh, and then the house, when I bought it, everybodythe real estate lady, she wouldnt come in. Would you sell me the acres in the front? And then when you could see the house, it was a goddamn mess. Burke: I never lived in a little small house, I have no idea. What a shame. Those stables? Formal gardens, stablesstables that you could live in. So itll be part of Staten Island that people, maybe fifty years from now when theres not a spot left, theyll all come out and theyll look and say, Wow, this is what it used to be.. Burke: Yes, I paid off this house. Must have been twelve big columns, it was, oh! George Burke . Q: You mentioned that the South Shore has changed in the last few years. Daller: You met some interesting people there. And he wanted to retire and he gave his son the business. It was gorgeous and very ornatewas very, very much like Greek Revival. George: Oh, I knew the Seguines for years. Like there was old Greek, like the Parthenon, the Greek templesoh, it was beautiful. And after he died the family still lived like we had my fathers money involved. He said, when he was moving here, he told the people there, he goes, Im moving. This whole corneryou could stand and see the street out there, so this whole corner was rebuilt. And she was laying like this. Because look how long the war went, and England had nothing. And I had this goddamn old sergeant who was going back also, but he was getting out of the service, and he was being discharged. And when I seen it all over there, and when I seen the British people were poor as church mice, they were selling everything. No, it wasnt that. Got a good price for a couple of other real estate pieces that I bought and fixed up and sold. So it took a fortune, but I had it, all that money, to restore the house. And now the people that I sold it to, the Pistillis [James and Kathleen Pistilli], they had the whole thing researched and now its got landmark things on it and everything. Stony Brook. Or was that brother Ed? Theyre deciding they want to build, so they tear down and build. And these roofs had big arches, like this. Well. I hope it isnt that the people who have access come in and empty it because Ive had people say, Oh, when youre not here, Im taking that painting, and Im taking that painting, and I want that couch, you know. George Burke was born on Staten Island and grew up in Annandale before moving to Florida with his family. And underneath it was a whole kitchen and dining room that opened out to under the porch. Q: So what was it like when you had the house finished and furnished? They couldnt. Get out. And then finally I had a man come in and talking to me about how hes bought a place on Staten Island that hes opening up a place like Saks only not as nice. And that was it. And their mansion, the White people that owned SS White, the White family, owned right across the creek, there, where the Captains Quarters [private development] are. And you can put it together and fix it. Theyd go in and theyd take the windows out and theyd use the windows, and they destroyed it. Q: Yes. Up until a year ago, he was still cutting the lawn! And in order to have food and such, youd have to bring it up the back stairs. Theyre all McMansions. You can go and look and read about anything about the South Shore of Staten Island. Put a candle right in the middle of that floor and go take a walk. [laughs] He called it the one-candle house. So I go downstairs. Daller: Thats been acquired over the years. And I had two or three other girls that were there. From what youve described, the different places that have been demolished over the years were extremely different from each other. Right across the creek. Kitchens were always built in a house outside by themself, and a breezeway going to the house, because the kitchens would always burn down. I said, and its going to take a lot of money to put that house back together. She said, Well, Im going to help you all I can. And I said, But why would I fix a house I didnt own? And she said, Well, why dont we talk about that. She said, If youre interested in buying it, I will make the arrangements that you can own it. All Rights Reserved. And I had beautiful big pieces of Meissen that I got when I was in Germany, and it all went here and there andI cant get it back. Stole all that carved stuff, stole all that stuff, that whole box of stuff. Did you know that from? He did so much work for you. Wow, what a great place. I said, now here you are, the woman we always wondered about, asking me if Im interested in saving that house? The mansion was gorgeous! George was a graduate of Hanover High School, Class of 1976, and entered the U.S. Navy. He was 77. I found a beautiful place in Tottenville and I opened it and called it the Tidewater Inn. And right there in front of the windows was a coffin with all the flowers around it and everything. And that painting of me, thats upstairs in my bedroomdid you ever see it? Restored the building, looked around, come down, bought this house from Mrs. Seguine, and then moved out of the bar and restaurantbecause I had a room upstairs in it. I bought those buildings. Daller: And he uses every room, he doesnt sit in one room. And if you were wearing them and you went and got in your car and turned the heater on, you smelled like piss. Theres a bunch of little houses now built all along through their gardens. Daller: Stating that it is part of it part of Historic House. Daller: At least the property itself, because when you stood outside, I mean, you couldnt see anything. So they said, You better get back here and do something. So I came back, got out of the military, got a job working for Saks Fifth Avenue. OBITUARY Kathleen Burke January 20, 1945 - January 26, 2023. I want it now. I could never get it. Well, he lived on Staten Island. Prince Edward Island. The 84-year-old former interior designer has joint ownership of the Seguine Mansion with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and he actually resides inside the historical. Daller: No, that still has to be discussed. Off of Hylan Boulevard? And I took interior design and the history of architecture, and something else. Burke: I went and I was stationed in England, and I loved being in England. Hell utilize every room of the house. It turned my stomach just to watch all of that gorgeous stuff just destroyed. So you really cant even try to say what does it feel like? When I bought it, I didnt know what was that ones house. I forgot whose house it was. Q: Is there somebody in particular that you work with for reupholstery or restorations? And it didnt take long to sell because it was a big piece of property, nice house. And, she said, If so, we will give you gifts. And then that was the end. Q: The stuff that you got in England, from Mrs. Murphy. There was the main house, over here was the bar, over here was this big dining room, and this was the main house. Obituary for George W. Burke | George W. Before he left, the house was fine. You cant ride anywhere but in a circle arena. Burke: No, who gave me that? Christ, a good ten, twelve years. Probably. My sister, Frances, got me a nice little apartment in the Bronx, right next to her. Burke: It was. And I said, Well, the smell is still there. And I said to her, Whatever happened to the old girl? And she said, Well, years ago, when she died, she said, she was laid out in the front parlor in the coffin, and it was nothing but lilacs. And my nephewwhat the hell was he? George Burke is the restorer of the historic Seguine Mansion on the South Shore of Staten Island, where he has lived and taken care of the property for over four decades. And I went from room to room and it took me a couple of years, didnt it? Because he lived right here, lived right here on Staten Island. And he dealed in antique rugs, and regular rugs and everything. Will they appreciate it? What are we gonna do here? So he said, Well, I really love doing this, George. And I said, Okay, John, thats fine. Q: Can you tell me about the ghost in that house? They couldnt handle it, the clientele that came in. But I mean, that wasthe holes, the plaster gone. And one day, I was sitting in the dining room. Burke: After I had the house, then I got the big pieces of furniture. Daller: Well, he said, he felt that house had spirits in it. And one day I got a call from Mrs. Seguine. Yes. And it became quite the place to be. And the post is still there and the staircase is still in good shapebut thats still in the house, now, down there. So, I dont know. Q: And so all these items went upwalked up the stairs and were, carried back down the stairs. In my early twenties? And you would have been taxed in this country if it was already like that. And the house was really, needed shapebut thank God it was built as well is it was built, otherwise it would have fallen down. Thats whats in this whole house, all the things you see. I found these here on Staten Island in somebodys basement! My sisterher mother [indicates Daller], Francesmy sister living in the Bronx, she got me a little apartment and she got me a job working for Saks Fifth Avenue. And thats what this house is. So what I did, I decided, well, Id go inand we had where you could buy all your liquor and such in the post exchange. Q: So part of why it closed was because. And I went around and we all hadyou were only allowed to buy two bottles of wine and a bottle of whiskey, or something. And she said, George, do you know who this is? and with her big Southern accent. But they tore the house down to build that school. And they did. Daller: We really cant give you any details on that. That was her name. And, I had a lot of time over there in London and so I decided, Well, hell, Im going to go to school and learn something. So I took interior design. WHEN George Burke was growing up on Staten Island in the 1930s and '40s, he used to ride horses with a pair of sisters, Elizabeth and Belle Seguine. And she had this woman who was a caretaker. I bought another restaurant, didnt I? Oh, that was the ghost in Tottenville. If you give me a big helping hand here. I said, You know, I dont make that much money. Q: So its confidential becauseoh, okay. You dont have to worry about, sleeping on your couches and all that kind of stuff, and, you know, pulling out fake beds, and that kind of stuff. Daller: You werent here. Things like that? And finally their husbands were getting pissed at them, because they were never home, they were always here. Q: And you feel that thats at risk because of the development thats happening now. And she was living here all by herself. The recognitions bestowed upon him: He received the 2015 Community Certificate of Appreciation, a proclamation from Staten Island for George Burke Day, the 2016 Preservation League Award and the NYS Senate Certificate of Recognition for 2015.The unique creatures on his property: Eighteen peacocks, descending from two he obtained in Florida, roam on his property. So every time she wants to go riding, she has to go all the way to New Jersey, ride her horse, and then come all the way back. I'll never tire of the house. Was it your mother I gave her all the blue and. And the house was like this, a big piece with two big wings. But anyway, she said, Im not going in the house. And here was the street. And if I couldnt take care of them, Id call down to the base and theyd send a helicopter and theyd pick them up and take them down to the hospital, because we had to take care of them, because Alaska was ours, and all the Eskimos was our responsibility. Yes, by the time I got to do all that I had no money left. Now theyre worth a couple hundred-dollars apiece. Its just a shame. Burke: And he was one of the top portrait painters in Madrid. And it just was luck that I had just sold a real estate deal and made a lot of money. They just went and just vandalized it to hell until there was nothing but a shell left. Its a plus for the borough too. . And I worked there for quite a while, and I lived in the Bronx. I mean, as a kid going down here crabbing, down on the beach, we used to look back at the house all the time. Burke: Well, I dont know if people will ever realize in years and years to come that I saved so much, but they did give me a plaque for restoration. And I had to laugh. . And not only that, we got a lot of manureI used to have it to put on all the gardens and to put on the fields and whatnot.
